Oh, and Chris, take it from me that you want to avoid saccharine shite like The Breakfast Club like the plague. Take it from someone who was a teenager in the 80's and every single girl I dated would suggest we watch it. In the pursuit of sexual gratification I sat through that fucking turgid bollocks more times than I care to remember and carry a burning hatred in my heart of hearts for every bastard involved in it.
Oh don't worry, of the films I listed it was the only one where not watching it was entirely intentional. Some films you just know you're unlikely to enjoy, and feelgood teen dramas from before you were born are usually in that category.

I think Breakfast Club is worth a watch, mostly because it's unintentionally(?) hilarious in places, like when they smoke weed and go nuts, culminating in Emilio Estevez destroying a plate glass window through the power of shouting.

Plus it's one of those where scenes have been emulated/taken the piss out of by so many others, that I think it's worth watching where it originated.

Sixteen Candles, however, I found so disturbingly racist and sexist (rapey, even) that it took great force of will to actually finish it. In fact, it's probably worth watching simply for that, to see the one where John Hughes got it badly wrong.

at this point Snowy, its probably quicker to list the classics you have seen. Personally the 70s was the best decade for Hollywood, the films were so gritty and real.
I got a cool little scratchcard-poster from my brother for my birthday last year with 100 films to watch on it. We did start (my wife even sat through the whole LOTR trilogy) but have lost the faith a bit and stopped. I think it was Charlie Chaplin's Great Dictator followed by the fucking awful Clockwork Orange that put us off...

This is as good a thread as any: I just realised that David St. Hubbins (Spinal Tap) is Chuck McGill, Saul Goodman's brother... the actor Michael McKean.

*Bump*

Tonight I shall be viewing Manhunter for the very first time, it's a little bit alarming to me even that I've managed to never actually see it. I mean Directed by Michael Mann AND starring William Petersen??? Dave, oh Dave. I've always kind of overwhelmingly shied away from it the same way I did The Thing for decades - only for that to become one of my most treasured and rewatched movie experiences.

Building the future, and keeping the past alive - are one and the same thing.

I'd forgotten about this thread. Of the films I'd not seen at the time, I've now seen three of them:

Mullholland Drive - I was something of a stranger to Lynch when I watched it, so while I did enjoy it I think it would benefit from a rewatch now I've delved into most of his other work. Put it this way, it's a hell of a lot more palatable than Eraserhead!

Amadeus - Loved it. No notes, and I may pick up the 4k despite already owning the blu ray.

Citizen Kane - Overrated guff. In the modern age, at least. One of those which revolutionised cinema way back when, blah blah, but I'm afraid today it's mostly awful. And the thing is there are plenty of dated films which had a massive impact on cinema that do still hold up and are very much worth a watch, so I'm inclined to think Citizen Kane really is just a bit shit outside of its medium-forming achievements and always has been.

Love Coen Brothers films but never seen Blood Simple, Barton Fink or the Hudsucker Proxy. Actually I haven't seen anything between No Country and Buster Scruggs, but I don't think I'm missing much.

I rewatched it recently and enjoyed it so much more than the first time I saw it. Great film. I'd still pick Fargo over it, though.

I think Barton Fink is their best. Blood Simple not so much but Hudsucker is great. I'm actually not much of a fan of their post 90s stuff for the most part.

Wasn't for me, though that's largely because I find John Malkovich very hard work and I don't rate his performances much. In the Line of Fire is his only role that I consider decent.
