I have a friend who was an absolute demon at painting them then and who has only got better over the years. He now buys whole armies (at fucking crazy cost), paints them and then sells them on ebay for a packet. It was always depressing gaming with him in your party - he would build his actual character by cutting bits from others if he couldn't find a miniature to match and grafting them together, then paint them in insane detail.
