Talking to one of my friends today, lamented my brush dilemma.
He casually threw out that my christmas present would be with me tomorrow and I shouldn't buy any new brushes

That's some really nice shading on those Tyranids Tichinde. What are you going to use for the bases?

With my Terminators (sworn enemies of Tyranids), I used some of that Games Workshop gravel and grass which comes in tubs:

As a 40K 2nd ed Dark Angel I find your colour choices boring and sad
As a hobbyist, that is some really nice work. I've got some 2nd ed metal CSM termies begging to be stripped and re-painted which is on my list of things to do now I've got my custom paint job figured out

The bases are gonna be some gravelly stuff I've got with a mix of some washes to give it some variety.

My primary opponent back in the day was SWolves, so I have issues with them.
I will always have a gaming memory of my Dread's lascannons removing both of Bjorn's arms.
Then watching Bjorn headbutt my dread to death.
Good times.

My swarm also has a date with some SWolves and some Admech in the new year. Looking forward to it.

Bringing this thread back from the dead to post my first ever painted miniatures. They're 3D printed so a bit rough, and my painting is even rougher.



Hoo boy have I got some practice to do. I really don't understand how people paint things this small.

Miniature painting is indeed a masochistic hobby. In my youth I used to collect a few bits of Warhammer, mainly the board games, and whilst I tried my best with them I loathed the painting process and could never produce anything even remotely decent looking. Practice makes perfect and all, but I didn't have the patience for it back then.

I have a friend who was an absolute demon at painting them then and who has only got better over the years. He now buys whole armies (at fucking crazy cost), paints them and then sells them on ebay for a packet. It was always depressing gaming with him in your party - he would build his actual character by cutting bits from others if he couldn't find a miniature to match and grafting them together, then paint them in insane detail. I would rock up with my standard Mr Clumsy fare and quietly seethe

One of the things I really wanted when I bought my new home was a room I could dedicate to hobby / craft stuff. I've always had to build things at my computer desk, meaning I had to set everything out and then tidy it all away again at the end, which was always a barrier to continuing a project. Now I can just walk away and shut the door, so I can do little bits here and there when I fancy.


It's not a massive room so the 3D printing station is out of shot, off to the right. It's not exactly finished, but just having the big overhead lamps (I have a second full-height one that'll cover the other desk) is a massive improvement over the last space I had to do this stuff in.

Anyway, my first real project for the new room is the 1/72 Luke's T-65 X-Wing from Bandai. The next big Gundam build I'm wanting to do is going to require a lot of weathering, which is something I've never really had much practice with, so a Star Wars kit is a perfect introduction as everything (outside of Imperial equipment) in that universe is absolutely filthy. It's also going to be the first kit I've attempted to paint largely assembled, rather than individual parts or small sub-assemblies, which I'm hoping will make my paint work a little more consistent.



I'm probably going to do a few of the main Rebel and Imperial fighters to get the practice in, but I do eventually want to build Bandai's 1/72 Perfect Grade Millennium Falcon, which is hugely expensive but if I can get the paintwork right, is about as close to the filming model as it's possible to get.
