I suppose you could argue why bother putting any budget or effort in when the franchise just prints money on its own? The return for their investment is absolutely incredible and I'm not sure how much making the games actually any better would really improve the sales given absolutely everyone already buys them.
But at least with other games companies that churn out the same game year after year, I still get a sense of *some* sort of professional pride. Your EA Sports titles and their ilk are usually just lazy roster updates in terms of content, but they always at least look decent if nothing else. The newest Pokemon Legends game releases this week, where the game world consists entirely of one Paris-inspired city. At ground level where they're impossible to miss, there are building facades that look to be made up of one 4-sided polygon with a repeating texture slapped on top. There's zero geometry. That was borderline unacceptable in a second-generation 3D engine game from the late-90s, nevermind a title released on the most powerful platform the franchise has ever had access to in 2025. I'm not suggesting it's an ugly game exactly, the art direction is still at least present, but it's woeful how low-effort everything looks.

I feel like even with modern-day capitalism, a product that measures its profit percentage with six figures should have some preference of giving something back to the customers. I can't think of another profitable game franchise that acts like this.

I don't think there's any course correcting from what the release of this game has signalled to gamers, it's still far from fixed and to put it on sale so early when the game is still said to be in the state it is system requirement wise to actually get a solid experience...yeah, I feel the damage is all but done here. Opening to what was said to be half the sales of BL3 with a budget more than double of BL3 and man don't get me wrong I love the Borderlands series personally, it's long been my must-have release but the way they have designed 4 (not just the reported poor loot end game/UI and no more hubs) again looks like too much of a departure from what I want out of the experience. Sure, I'll confess I'm perhaps being overly picky there but I know exactly what I like and spit in the face of progression! I kid, obviously. I do still think the UI is a bit of a disaster.

Naturally, the Youtube grifter pool are having a fucking field day with this one and it's sad to know that Randy gave them all the ammunition they could possibly have hoped for, it's hard to not blame them either for pouncing on it so hard after what had to be one of the worst public relation game releases in recent memory, if indeed Randy still deems online controversy as keeping the game within the realms of having people openly discuss the game aka more headlines more traction more sales, it absolutely backfired in this regard. They still have additional content to finish producing and release - Borderlands 4 is looking at a possible $130+ million loss if you include marketing costs and those eager to get refunds. It's now down to 32k all time 24hr peak players, for a brand-new Borderlands game mere weeks after release and already on sale which is a publisher decision and nobody elses...that is beyond concerning, but who will be held accountable I wonder?

I hate to see a series go down like this. Truly I do. Randy can't help himself being Randy and somehow same time every time he's put front and centre to be who he feels he is required to be.

I genuinely hope Gearbox/2K learn a definitive and important lesson from this one. Yeah...
Building the future, and keeping the past alive - are one and the same thing.

Personally I don't think they could release another one of these that wasn't openworld, it needed to move that way. If it was just the same game for a fourth time I think the sales would have been even worse. I do wonder how much the poor sales are down to the general feeling around Borderlands 3 post release. The tide definitely turned from the general positive feeling on release, even if I think a lot of it was overblown and most the criticisms could be levelled at the previous games around characters and the quality of the writing/jokes. Maybe the series has just had its day and it needed more than a pivot to an openworld to succeed.

I'm a big Borderalnds fan and I will probably pick this up eventually but even for me the series feels tired.

I love me some Borderlands as well but I was getting jadded with 3. I might pick this up on sale in a few years but I imagine I'll lose interest pretty quickly. Yeah I think it's had it's day and they need to move onto something new.

An squad based, extraction looter shooter with battle royale elements is obviously the only way to go...

Or a card game.

https://www.thegamer.com/painkiller-reb ... am-launch/

So they rebooted Painkiller into an apparently bland co-op shooter. "Single player" requires you to play with 3 bots and isn't fun. Sounds like pish.
