I want to get a 4K TV but every time I am about to press buy I remember I need to buy new lights, dining room furniture, pay for my son's schooling and save up for my pension
so fuck knows when I will get around to buying a 4K monitor !

It's not just the monitor, a graphics card to play acceptable framerates at that res cost a King's ransom. Quite happy at 1080p atm, might get a 144hz jobby sometime if they drop in price but not a 4k.

I play PC games for high frame rates, I'm not bothered so much by resolution on here; particularly because I love my IPS monitor and the 1080p limit on it has never felt like an issue. Running PC ports at 4k at the same standards I can get out of games on my current system at 1080p would almost certainly require dropping a hefty amount of cash on new components.
I've got a 4k TV and PS4 Pro for slower paced pretty looking stuff with HDR and what-not. To be honest, I prefer the PC.

I'm actually the opposite; I largely use my PC for the resolution, but then I only have a 1080p TV and my monitor is a massive ultra-wide 35" 1440p behemoth. So long as I can get 30fps, I'm happy, but I really like the extra width of an ultra-wide, something that I don't believe any consoles support.

I play at 1440p. I find it a nice res to appreciate graphics and it's one that my 1080 can cope with fine on ultra settings.
Can't really do that at 4k annoyingly.

I've got an LG 34 inch ultrawide. Love me some 3440x1440 gaming. I did end up building a new rig at the beginning of the year to be able to keep playing games at decent settings though.

4k, refresh rates, fps, all words designed to spin you out of your hard earned cash!
But then I can't spot fps dips unless they hit low 20's, and can't see cinema or Nvidia's 3d so what the fuck do me and my rubbish eyes know

I've got a Geforce 1080 and use it with a 27" 1440p monitor, which is spot on for me. I recently got a 4k TV, so I tried out some 4k gaming and I was mildly disappointed as the aesthetic difference from 1440p was negligible (even close up) and yet the performance impact was huge. I'd much rather have everything on ultra at 1440p than on medium/high at 4k.
Re: Only 6% of Steam gaming is above 1080p
Yep, same. I recently upgraded from a 1920x1200@60Hz (dat 16:10 ratio!!!) monitor to a 2560x1440@165Hz. Having really high framerates is awesome, and with G-Sync (or FreeSync for ATI customers IIRC) you don't get that horrific tearing when your framerate does dip.
My new machine is pretty beastly, but unless you're running a pair of 1080Ti, I don't think you'll hit a reliable and high framerate when pushing a 4K monitor.

Re: Only 6% of Steam gaming is above 1080p
Id pick high rez over framerate anyday so long as the framerate is stable and not horribly low. I always think 30 looks so much better but 60+ feels better. Seeing things far in the distant that isnt mush is great, that said I think 1440p is just about all you need for that on a smaller screen but I also have never used a 4k computer monitor.

Re: Only 6% of Steam gaming is above 1080p
Depends what you mean by "smaller" screen - anything up to 27" is where 1440p shines.
Framerate vs resolution is definitely an entirely subjective choice, but one thing that's objectively true is that Windows is a sack of shit at switching between readable resolutions for desktop, and gaming resolutions when hooked up to a 4K screen. Steam gets fucked up and your mouse ends up out of sync (like Steam thinks it's drawing twice its real size, so to click a button you have to wave your mouse around in empty space), Windows widgets get drawn at the wrong sizes, and all sorts of weird fuckin' shit - unless they've majorly fixed shit in the last 6 months.
My mate had all of the above and worse which is why he returned his 4K monitor and bought the same 27" 1440p one that I got. Fuckin' Windows, man. Ugh!

Re: Only 6% of Steam gaming is above 1080p
4K is really hard to pull of at a decent frame rate so it's not surprising really, especially considering the price of the high end cards these days. Unless you hit the Β£600+ ti or titan cards its not really doable. 1440p is the sweet spot.

Yar, I was pretty pissed at the time though so who knows?
