The non-combat stuff looks great. It's hard to tell what exactly was going on with the combat, but then I felt the same watching pre-release footage of the FF7 remake and that turned out to be completely coherent despite all the apparent chaos. I'm cautiously optimistic on this one.Raid wrote: βSun Jun 13, 2021 9:32 pmI think people will see that Guardians of the Galaxy headline and assume it's an addon or half-sequel to that tedious Square Enix's Disney's Marvel's The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Live Service Roadmap Heroes, but it's much more a Mass Effect meets Telltale Games style single-player RPG adventure thing that has a lot of promise. They've got the humour and style of the MCU films down, without looking too much like the aforementioned knockoff MCU Marvil's The Avongers.

From what I've read floating around the internet it very much seems to be that. Overall the Square conference was a train wreck, Babylon's Fall looks like D-tier Platinum phoneing it in and that Final Fantasy game they showed at the end looked hilariously bad.

I actually think the pixel remakes may be improved versions of the originals. I've watched the video again this morning and there was what I think was a shot of FFV at the bottom of the screen so the names were cut off (there's a purple headed female character that I assume to be Faris), and it didn't appear to be using the god awful redesign sprites. It was also in wide-screen so it wasn't just the SNES game used as a placeholder.DjchunKfunK wrote: βMon Jun 14, 2021 8:27 amFrom what I've read floating around the internet it very much seems to be that. Someone looked at the available footage and put this little comparison together.Raid wrote: βMon Jun 14, 2021 9:51 amI actually think the pixel remakes may be improved versions of the originals. An improvement on the phone ports but the quality is variable compared to the originals.

That's a great illustration. FFV was one of my absolute favourite games from my teens, and those hideous over-smoothed, reproportioned sprites from the 2013 phone release just weren't the characters that I spent all of that time playing with, and so that release was dead in the water for me despite it being technically more accomplished compared to the original SNES ROM (occasionally dodgy translation included) that I'd played for 40 or 50 hours one summer.
I'm not really sure that the new versions are superior to the SNES originals, to be honest there's barely a change, The shading is a little less contrasty. Faris herself looks a little odd with her newly lightened skin colour. She's a pirate at the start of the game (albeit one who docks her ship in a cave), you'd think she'd be fairly tanned. Still, they're a vast improvement over the 2013 versions - they don't need to be ultra high-res, those tiny pixel faces were expressive enough (and that was improved further in FFVI).

As much as I like Mac, he was a tad harsh. I thought the Xbox showcase was really good.

Didn't Mac turn out to be a bit of a misogynist or racist? Or was that a different YouTube person.

No, it was indeed Mac. I've not watched any of his videos since.DjchunKfunK wrote: βWed Jun 16, 2021 8:50 amDidn't Mac turn out to be a bit of a misogynist or racist? Or was that a different YouTube person.
