General Film News
Re: General Film News
I also haven’t seen the second, but I was never overly enamoured with the first. It was okay the first time I watched it, and when I tried rewatching it last year I thought it was pretty bad and far too long.

Re: General Film News
Yes, I am sort of worried if I watch the first one again now I will hate it instead of being caught up in the wonder of it, as I was when I saw it in (I think), 2012.
My fire is more than can be made with forests,
My state more base than are the basest valleys;
I wish no evenings more to see, each evening;
Shamed, I hate myself in sight of mountains,
And stop mine ears, lest I grow mad with music.

I enjoyed the first in a poor mans Ferngully sort of way. I did really love Ferngully as a kid but Ive not watched that in like 30 years so maybe it also wont stand up

Re: General Film News
I watched the 2nd one when it came out on Disney+. What was it about?, I can't remember. I do unfortunately remember the incredibly annoying teenagers calling each other "Cuz" and "Bro" every few seconds. I agree that Cameron has pissed away his career on this franchise. There are hints of what we could have got with the human military tech in the films, something Cameron has always been great at.
Re: General Film News
The teenage dialogue was what took it from "film I don't care about" to "film I actively dislike". It completely ruins all of the effort put into the setting, I just cannot fathom why they thought it was a good idea to use such specific young-American dialogue for their extravagantly-alien world - it just made it feel entirely terrestrial.
"Look at this incredible alien world we've created! It took years and entre teams of artists to produce this lush extra-terrestrial environement! Now, watch as we tell a story that could have been set in downtown Los Angeles with minimal changes!"

Damn, the Naked Gun remake-quel is apparently really good

Re: General Film News
I'll believe it when I see it. That reviewer didn't really strike me with confidence when he compared The Naked Gun to Spaceballs, presumably because they were from roughly the same era of filmmaking, and ignored the fact that they're very different styles of humour. The only thing I'm not surprised to hear works is Neeson as Drebin; given Nielson was the serious actor who could do deadpan so brilliantly, I could easily imagine Neeson being similar.
Re: General Film News
I think it was mentioned more because it's another old comedy getting a sequel in the near future rather than comparing the comedic styles.Raid wrote: ↑Wed Jul 30, 2025 3:37 pmI'll believe it when I see it. Re: General Film News
He specifically says it's about the style of comedy, and refers to "slapstick, spoof comedy", which I suppose works, but doesn't feel like the best description of The Naked Gun to me. The only comparable comedy I can think of to the Naked Gun series was Airplane!, which was also from Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker.
Re: General Film News
It's definitely piqued my interest anyway. Maybe not 'rush to see it in the cinema' levels, but when it hits a streaming service I might check it out, whereas previously I'd completely written it off.

Re: General Film News
Part of me wonders whether the jokes in the trailer were the only ones they could put in there, as all of the others are run-on, referential jokes (as that first review alludes to) that don't really work in a trailer format. With the exception of the Nordberg gag, everything in the trailers fell flat for me.
Re: General Film News
Agreed. But I'm all up for a comedy resurgence, it's been slim pickings on that front for a while now...Raid wrote: ↑Wed Jul 30, 2025 5:01 pmPart of me wonders whether the jokes in the trailer were the only ones they could put in there, as all of the others are run-on, referential jokes (as that first review alludes to) that don't really work in a trailer format. Re: General Film News
True. I genuinely don't remember the last proper comedy film I watched. There are plenty of light-hearted films that might fit the bill (Deadpool and Wolverine's probably the closest), but they probably all list comedy second and action / adventure first.
Re: General Film News
Kermode's not as glowing about it:
There's one thing he says that I think nails my concern: too many of the gags end up being oversold; Leslie Nielsen never sold you a gag.
I'll definitely watch it and I'd love for it to be good, but my expectations are still firmly anchored.
