I watched an episode or two a few months back when it started being posted on Youtube (fairly sure it was just the standard def versions). In my case it's possibly nostalgia speaking, because it was my absolute favourite as a kid, but I 100% agree with you on all points. The soundtrack was superb; it sells the suspense brilliantly.

It was brutal in places. Medieval combat is terrifying.

Blue Eye Samurai (Netflix)

Animated show about a 'half-breed' (half-white) warrior in 17th Century Japan, after it had closed its borders and foreigners not tolerated on its soil, and their mission to get revenge on the men that wronged them.

I don't really want to spoil anything further about the premise or the various revelations we're shown, but suffice to say this is one of the best shows I've seen this year, certainly the best animated show I've watched since Arcane, and that's saying something as I came off the back of Pluto (also on Netflix) which was also excellent and highly recommended for any watchers of anime.

I'm only halfway through but very much looking forward to the rest.

Bit of a delayed reaction, but I stuck Blue Eye Samurai on my Netflix list when Sly posted this, and I finally got around to watching it. I completely agree, it's a fantastic first season, with another apparently due this year. It did take me a couple of episodes to warm to it, but once it gets going it doesn't really stop. The voice acting from both the main protagonist and main antagonist is superb, and I really loved the art style.
