I've taken ours off the "you will not turn on under any circumstances" mode in preparation for it getting colder, but I still had the windows open most of the day today upstairs. The 'stat is downstairs and came nowhere close to kicking in.

You big jessies.

And that's the story of why I'm not allowed near pregnant women for the next few weeks.

- Films In Concert. I usually go to the Royal Albert Hall once or twice a year for one of these; they put up a huge screen and play a film with the soundtrack being played live by an orchestra.

Every single event I've been to has been absolutely fantastic, starting with Fellowship of the Ring back in 2009. The film itself was preceded by an hour long talk with Howard Shore covering the creation of the music and how some of the themes came about. The highlights were the epic drum they built to get the deep sound of Moria and the way they created the industrial crashing sound of Isengard - wrap a huge chain around your arm, open a grand piano, and BANG. BANG BANG BANG. BANG.

Previous fantastic events have included Star Trek, Into Darkness, Jurassic Park, Gladiator, Casino Royale, and Interstellar.

Whilst not always the most amazing films (though I like them all) the soundtracks are fantastic. The Battle and The Might of Rome from Gladiator sent shivers down my spine.

Interstellar was definitely my favourite, for one reason - they did an hour-long talk beforehand again, introduced by Stephen Hawking and with Brian Cox, Chris Nolan, Hans Zimmer, and Kip Thorne discussing the music and science behind the film. Absolutely amazing to experience, regardless of what you might think of the film overall.

I would find that immensely distracting...
Between tedium and fright
Such is the song of the nether world
The hissing of rats
And the jarring chants of angels

Sounds awesome especially for films you've already seen so don't mind the 'distractions'

Yeah, it's very much about enjoying the music rather than watching the film.

So, shushing is frowned upon then?

I'm guessing at an event like that there's always going to be at least one dickhead recording it on their phone.

I took my wife to see Jack White play Hammersmith Odeon (whatever the fuck it is called now - rebranding can eat dicks) and you had to lock your phone in a little case that they gave you. The whole gig and just people rocking out to the band, not a single stupid screen in sight, it was utterly fucking marvellous.

As much as I hate how so many gigs have been ruined by a sea of phones, particularly because it kills the vibe around you at more energetic gigs when people are too concerned filming stuff to actually get into the music and bop around; I really hate the idea of locking your phone in a case. I like to take one photo during a concert just to aid my memory years down the line because I find that even a single image tends to bring memories of the whole gig flooding back. After that my phone goes in my pocket for the rest of the night. I still want access to it though in case of some sort of emergency.

I wish people would just learn better gig etiquette and to actually enjoy themselves a bit more so that devices like that aren't even needed. It seems that nobody can enjoy an experience nowadays without trying to milk it for brownie points on social media though.
