But it is how English works. I think you're concentrating on this one tiny detail and in doing so completely missing the point.

No I don't think so. I don't go into hyperbolic statements posing as facts.

So Kwarteng is gone. Not remotely surprising but it's pretty incredible that Truss has already needed one of her closest allies to fall on his sword just weeks into her premiership.

Each time we hit a new low you think that's it, but we seem to always find a way to sink further down.

I'm sad to say I stopped thinking that way several years back. We've still got a fair way to drop before the government tell the army to start executing the poor.
Still, if there's actually a coup this early on, it's pretty big news to find out that even Tories have a limit as to what they think they can get away with.

It'll be self preservation and nothing more. With their polling right now they are for sure absolutely desperate to correct those figures or else even typically safe seats may be up for grabs.Raid wrote: ↑Fri Oct 14, 2022 12:07 pmI'm sad to say I stopped thinking that way several years back. Some leaks from anonymous Tory MPs suggest they may even be willing to risk an imminent election in a calculated move that if they are seen to publicly be against Truss that they might be able to save their own skins. I don't see that being likely though. More likely we'll end up with a replacement PM before the end of the year who will try to salvage their polling when the real hardship for the country kicks in.
Re: The Absolute State Of It - It's The UK Politics Thread!
Truss is currently unable to be removed for 11 or so months so it'd require another change of Tory party internal policy to replace her, or at least that's what the news was suggesting earlier today. I reckon they'll force her to resign rather than removing her. She's called a press conference at 14:30, presumably to announce Kwarteng's replacement. It's good to know that a PM takes three months to make a decision on, but a chancellor barely takes three hours.
Kwarteng, incidentally, has publicly stated that he was pushed. He's clearly keen to avoid responsibility too.
