But on the plus side, as far as I'm aware you can't postface his name with "the disgraced former {x} secretary", so he's got that going for him.

Staggering. He isn't even a sitting MP.

I am surprised that they haven't just exhumed the rancid bones of the Milk Snatcher and stuck them in high office - surely being alive is not a consideration given the shower of soulless ghouls in power?

Looks like Cruelella had a heads up and jumped before she was put on a flight:

They're not going to drop it:
BBC News wrote:Conservative Neil O'Brien says following the Supreme Court's ruling, a new law is needed to override the Human Rights Act and "the thicket of case law built up by legal activism".

Sunak reiterates what he said earlier - that the government is working on a new Rwanda treaty to address the concerns of the court.

He adds that he is willing to change the laws, if the current rules are still "frustrating" his plans to "stop the boats".
How deranged do you have to be when everyone but Santa Claus tells you that your plan is both illegal and morally bankrupt and so you conclude that the solution is to circumvent pesky obstacles like human rights?

It's almost like there is a "conservative" hive-mind that has said fuck it, we can do what we want, no-one will stop us. Exactly mirroring the Ohio farce with them deciding to ignore the public vote on abortion access and just make the laws they want anyway.

Precisely what Lee Anderson (AKA 30p Lee) has come out with:
BBC News wrote:Lee Anderson, the Tory Party deputy chairman, says the government should "ignore the laws" and send migrants who cross the Channel to Rwanda on the same day they arrive in the UK.

Describing the Supreme Court judgment as a "dark day for the British people", Anderson says ministers should "just put the planes in the air now and send them to Rwanda".

"I think the British people have been very patient, I've been very patient, and now they're demanding action. And this has sort of forced our hand a little bit now," he says.

"It's time for the government to show real leadership and send them back, same day."
Maybe he should read up on Julius Caesar and tyranny. If he can read.

It's genuinely astounding that someone can get away with saying "ignore the laws" and still remain in a position of power in what is allegedly still a democracy.

Just been listening to LBC where a caller made the point that the government will probably make this a sovereignty issue again - as in "foreign laws are stopping us doing what we want; we need to take back our sovereignty." And the Tories are pushing the narrative this morning that it's vital we get the planes in the air to Rwanda immediately, lest untold 'bad things' happen.

I've been thinking about this a lot. Obviously the Tories are playing up to this to appease a certain voter base (and the far right contingent of their party), but it's not based in reality. Rwanda is not safe for refugees and declaring it safe does not make it so. The voters who believe the boats pose an existential threat to us and that sending them off to Rwanda is the best (or only) option are in a sort of trance of fearmongering. It's exactly how general anxiety works, where you concoct worst case scenarios in your head and then get worked up enough so that you start to believe they're not just real possiblities but things that are actually happening. But as soon as you ground yourself and snap out of the anxiety trance, you realise that your imaginations are not real at all.

The difference is that the Tories are validating that trance. If I had anxiety about getting on a plane and then the pilot told me that I was right to be worried, that there's a good chance we're going to crash, I'd be fucking petrified! The voters the Tories are appealing to have this anxiety about asylum seekers (to the point where I've seen people fretting about them taking up entire hotels and stockpiling weapons for some big assault, which is patently bollocks) and they're being told that they're correct - that they SHOULD be afraid, that time is running out and we need to abandon facts and laws to secure our country's future. It's beyond fearmongering - it's pure evil.

We need to find better ways to snap people out of these trances.
