I've accidentally taken photos from the inside of my pocket that have more plausibly shown military aircraft than that.

I'm not sure why "Area 51" is still considered particularly mysterious or exciting anymore. Sure, operations on the base are top secret, but we know where it is and have done for decades - hell I've landed aircraft there in DCS World (it has a really dull taxiway). If there are ultra-secret new aircraft (or ALIEN SPACESHIPS) being tested, we'd have photos of them. Groom Lake is a massive salt flat surrounded by mountains, I doubt it'd be that difficult to camp out near the base with a camera and a big lens.

I thought that since the Obama administration, the US Airforce had publicly acknowledged for the first time that Groom Lake is used as a military testing range, so the presence of prototype aircraft there wouldn’t be especially surprising. Historically, wasn’t the SR-71 Blackbird thought to have been developed there? I remember the rumours in the 90s of supposed sightings in the area of an aircraft dubbed Aurora which may have influenced later public projects such as the F-35.

It’d be interesting to know whether the extreme security around the facility is simply because so many people believe there’s alien stuff going on there and thus there are frequent attempts to breach the perimeter. I.e. If it didn’t have its reputation, would security there be much the same as any other airforce base?

I think it was the F-117 and probably the B2; the SR-71 probably needed a larger runway.

That's the thing; the projects that came out of Groom Lake in the 70s and 80s certainly *were* interesting, but it's too well known for it to fulfil that same purpose these days. Russia and China probably have satelites pointed in that direction constantly.

No, America's latest aircraft are almost certainly tested at Area 54, which is based at Mare Tranquillitatis. Area 52 kept flooding because of the intense water pressure, and 53 had much the same problem but with lava. You'd have thought they'd have learned their lesson, but Lockheed Martin dug too greedily and too deep.

Given the various events of the last few years, I don't think the accidental awakening of a Balrog by the USAF would surprise me anymore.
