Ben Stokes.

His new captaincy of the test side is revolutionary. 3-0 whitewash of the best side in the world, with 3 of the top 4 fastest +275 runs innings in the entire England 145-year test history coming in the last fortnight. Positive, aggressive, free-playing cricket that gives players full rein, encouragement and praise, and it is reaping dividends. He has literally come of age, and it is a joy to see his genius shine.

Yet another imperious win, England getting their highest ever 4th innings run chase — 378 — with 2 brilliant centuries from Root and Bairstow in a partnership of 269, both not out, to win by 7 wickets. This side is mighty!

Root has 5 test centuries so far this year, and Bairstow has 6 — 4 in the last 5 innings, the other being 71 not out. Both have already matched the record of 6 in a year set by Denis Compton and Michael Vaughan, with 3 tests against South Africa to come, and Pakistan later in the year. They are in the form of their life, and it is repeatable form, just astounding how this team is working.

"Webb’s image covers a patch of sky approximately the size of a grain of sand held at arm’s length by someone on the ground – and reveals thousands of galaxies in a tiny sliver of vast universe"

Amazing stuff :P

Beautiful, how far we've come yet we're distant observers. Less than gnats in the aether.

The amazing thing is some of those galaxies probably don't even exist anymore, that light is billions of years old.

A Lancaster bomber just flew past where I live, there's something I thought I'd never see :o

Or hear, hopefully. I live under the flightpath for the Battle of Britain Memorial flight when they head to Morecambe airshow, and you can usually hear the Lancaster a good while before you can see it. It's one of the best sounds in existence.

It's really windy today so the sound didn't travel so well, I just barely heard it to run to window and get a look.

I have the fortune of where I live to see regular flypasts—generally en route to Windsor, London, Farnborough etc. and back to their respective halts, with White Waltham, Wycombe and Benson airfields nearby. Merlins are a 7th sense to me now...hear them from miles away.

The best was when I spent a hot Summer Saturday afternoon wrapping silage bales out in a field that was under the turning point for a Spitfire giving the late Lord McAlpine a birthday display...I climbed up on the Tractor roof and sat mesmerised at its beauty, climbing down again halfway through after remembering I had binoculars in my lunch bag and got back up again to watch even closer. At the end of his display, the pilot buzzed me and waved, I nearly fell off!
