Re: Moving Pictures
It's out already, should have said that instead.

This blew my mind:

Re: Moving Pictures
Yeah, I saw that last week thinking it was a rhetorical question with the answer "probably not", but it's surprisingly compelling. I'm still trying to reconcile it with Roger Penrose's concept (and tbh I'd take the word of Penrose over Tyson every single time) that a universe in a heat-death state is essentially indistinguishable from a singularity, and so that is how the cycle of a universe happens. I'm not sure I understand it at all, really, but it feels like an idea that is not entirely incompatible with the black hole hypothesis.
I become fascinated with cutting-edge theoretical physics and then reach a point where I need a lie down, usually when it transitions from high-level concepts to actual physics.
EDIT - He talks about it between about 23m to 30m in this, including a nice bit about an Escher painting. It's incredible that he's this sharp at 93 years old.

5 minutes in and these people are even worse than my worst expectations. If they were given free reign to enforce their beliefs, I think they'd be indistinguishable from ISIS (except for the one book they read).
Re: Moving Pictures
So unreal. For one of them to just so gleefully state that he is in favour of autocracy so long as it is by a hard right Catholic and that he would like to see the constitution rewritten to reflect those values is just bonkers.
Re: Moving Pictures
My favourite was the woman who argued that immigrants can't be American and then immediately went on to say that her parents are immigrants.

Re: Moving Pictures
A few takeaways from that;
- I feel some of those people, one in particular, are there specifically to tell the naturalised immigrant to go home. It's not shocking, but seeing them telling Hasan to his face is still quite unsettling.
- It's refreshing to see a left-wing debater that's actually capable of dealing with the lies and logical fallacies the right seem to like to rely on.
- Tribalism has destroyed many people's ability to debate, you can see it in several of those right-wingers continuing to make arguments based on the assumption that Hasan agrees with every liberal policy, which he immediately refutes and they continue regardless. This is something I've been saying for a while now, and it affects both sides of the political divide in both the UK and US. I genuinely don't know how you fix this problem. Many of the right-wing debaters there are on the younger side - is their tribalism going to diminish as they age and gain experience, or is it just going to be reinforced because they're simply incapable of believing someone from the left?
