Given Trump has deployed the national guard (ie: actual soliders) to quell protests, it's not going to be much of a surprise that they're using military spy drones against their own population. These things are allegedly capable of tracking 25,000 separate objects over an enormous area, to the point where I think they could see someone leave their home in violation of the new curfew, travel to a protest, arrive back home, and then surprise! Donald knows where you live, where you've been, and can come and arrest you using troops carrying assault weapons, at which point you're branded a terrorist and shipped off to El Salvador because Don thinks your "Mom" tattoo is coded gang slang.

I'd sorta love to ask one of those 2nd Amendment gun nuts what they think of all this. The 2nd Amendment is the right to bear arms to prevent a tyrannical government from oppressing its own people. Well, here we are, and the tyrannical government is oppressing its own people. I hope you're a good shot with that covert-carry Glock, because the Reaper drone is 25,000 feet up and it knows exactly where you live.

It's interesting that I've not seen anything about the National Guard or the Marines causing trouble in LA, but tonnes of examples of LAPD needlessly escalating situations or just straight up ignoring the law and going for full on police brutality. There was a clip of a protester giving a shouty, impassioned speech to a bunch of National Guard, telling them that they swore an oath to the constitution, not to a person or a party, and they should think about what they're doing, and the Guards just stood there and politely listened. No fuss, no escalation, no telling him to back off or shut up.

Compare that to footage of a swarm of LAPD armed with assault rifles advancing on a group of about 12 peaceful protesters, ordering them to disperse their 'unlawful gathering'. Or the man who asked a police officer to identify himself and provide a badge number (which they have to do as per the California penal code), and after ignoring the requests for a while, the officer decided to shoot him with a non-lethal round. Or the three journalists so far who have been shot with rubber bullets with zero provocation or justification.

The military appear to be there out of unwilling (and possibly unlawful) obligation. The LAPD appear to be trying to fuel a civil war.

I believe that the US military are actually trained to deal with possibly hostile crowds and protesters without escalating the situation. US cops on the other hand appear to be nothing more than thugs and shitheads that resort to force at the slightest chance.

Its probably never going to happen, but some of those soldiers actually following the law and refusing to take part in this shit show would probably be a turning point.

The thing they always like to harp on about with 2A is the "well regulated militia" part, it is supposed to defend against this overreach, not be part of it!

Then you have the 'fluff my desperate ego' parade where fat soldiers are requested to not turn up, and any soldier not loyal to trump is required to ask for exemption...you can imagine the Hobson's Choice that presents... It's a fair point, although I believe the NG are only being deployed to protect federal premises and personnel, so they're not nearly as widespread as the LAPD.

There was a Reddit thread asking current or former military servicepeople where the line was drawn when it comes to disobeying an order the individual considered to be unlawful. While the general answer was that you had to be bloody sure that the order *was* illegal before questioning it, and even if it actually was, you'd likely be ending your career by doing so, the general consensus was that they'd be uneasy about this whole situation. They know that they're trained for killing enemy combatants, not domestic law enforcement. Obviously they all say that they would disobey an order to shoot into a crowd, but that's not the point.

I only learned about the Kent State Massacre a few weeks back watching Netflix's pretty decent Vietnam War documentary (part of their Turning Point series; worth a watch if you're a bit ignorant about the political side of that conflict as I was). No orders were ever issued to fire at protesters, but the if one of those soldiers is put in a position where they fear for their life, as happened at the university, they're going to take action to end that danger. That incident is I think the reason why people are so concerned about this deployment - perhaps those soldiers are well trained, but what happens if one idiot in the protesting group decides to brandish a pistol at a protest? Soldiers are trained to act on that sort of thing, and they're probably not armed with rubber bullets.

I'm not going to pretend a shooting because of such an incident is what Donald's hoping for, as he was probably at the doctors getting his bone spurs looked at on 4th May 1970 and missed the evening news and has never opened a history book, but it's entirely possible they're searching for an inciting incident.

I honestly think Trump’s primary reason behind this is his typical distraction technique, in this case to distract from his Big Beautiful Bill not getting the support it needs and his tariffs not panning out, and possibly even his spat with Musk. I doubt he cares at all about immigrants in LA.

Good news everyone, Trump is launching a mobile network, with an "American-made" smartphone.

In a press release, Trump Mobile calls it “a sleek, gold smartphone engineered for performance and proudly designed and built in the United States.” It’s available to preorder now with a $100 deposit, and will either be available from August 2025 or September 2025, depending on whether you believe the press release or the Trump Mobile website.

Details on the phone itself are sketchy. The product page includes what appears to be a Photoshopped image of a brushed gold phone with a “T1” logo and US flag on the back. The triple camera layout appears similar to recent iPhone Pro models at first glance, but the lenses are strangely spaced, and there doesn’t appear to be any camera flash.

There are numerous errors on the page, from a processor section that doesn’t list a processor, RAM that’s described as storage, and the boast of a “5000mAh long life camera,” when it presumably means the battery.

I absolutely cannot wait for it to be unveiled that every component of the phone is made where basically every other smartphone is manufactured, because the only US-manufactured phone costs $2199 and has specs that are apparently 5-10 years out of date. And it has a specific tariff exemption. And they're selling every scrap of data they collect on their users. Do you think the US-made bit is just a complete lie, or will they add a gold sticker to the back to claim it's manufacturer in the US?
