Upgrade Time

Post by elgaucho » Wed Dec 30, 2020 8:04 pm

So the other half's pc is getting to the point that it struggles to play some of the more recent games like Jedi Fallen Order smoothly, and has a few other little performance issues going on.

Not entirely suprising given the build dates back to 2009 or so, with only a graphics card upgrade in that time.

So I've specced up a replacement machine for her, below.

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/j84XMv
CPU: Intel Core i9-10850KA Avengers Limited Edition 3.6 GHz 10-Core Processor ($594.70 @ Amazon)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master MasterLiquid Lite 240 66.7 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler ($54.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: MSI MPG Z490 GAMING EDGE WIFI ATX LGA1200 Motherboard ($199.99 @ Adorama)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory ($144.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Samsung 870 QVO 1 TB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($104.99 @ Amazon)
Video Card: MSI GeForce RTX 3070 8 GB GAMING X TRIO Video Card ($989.00 @ Amazon)
Case: Fractal Design Define 7 ATX Mid Tower Case ($171.99 @ B&H)
Power Supply: Corsair RMx (2018) 850 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply ($144.99 @ Best Buy)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 Home OEM 64-bit ($108.78 @ Other World Computing)
I'm probably going to go with this and, as I can't be bothered with the QA / building of it, probaly use Alternate to pre-build it for me and send it done.

I'm expecting it to be a complete overkill of a spec for most purposes, but curious to see what it actually does. I'm also expecting to be jealous... :|

I'd strongly advise going AMD 5000 series and getting an NVMe as well.

EDIT: The reason I say that is because benchmarks put the 5000 series at the top and that includes the 5600x which outperforms the 10900k.

Would it be worth going for a similarly priced nvme drive over a SATA SSD at this point? That Samsung drive has about a quarter of the read speed of a similarly priced Western Digital 1gb drive (the write speed is the same).

Sorry!

She's been nagging me for ages about this, and it's taken me a while to really get back into looking at options. I think it's only fair I look for her what I'd look at for me!

(I might swap out hers with mine and hope she doesn't notice!) ;)

Thanks for the added comments Raid and DJ. I'm totally out of the loop on NVMe, but after looking into it, that's a totally sound swap. And I mean wow... I had no idea what those drives were capable of!

I've also mocked up a provisional replacement build with a Ryzen 7 5800X and Asus X570 motherboard. I need to look into the differences between the TUF and ROG series. And that would probably go with a Corsair Hydro H100i cooling solution.

I knew it was a good idea sense checking before proceeding!

I just realised that the 1tb version of the drive I own (which has higher read speeds but vastly better write speeds than the WD one I linked above) is only an extra fiver. That one's six times the read performance of the Samsung.

Talking of SSDs, my 5 year old Sandisk Plus SSD 240GB is coming towards the end of its life I think (it did a self-repair on boot a couple of days ago and the total writes is a huge number) so I ordered a Samsung 860 EVO 500GB to replace it with. Was going dirt cheap and it's a great SSD.

But... I just randomly checked my Asus Z97 MOBO specs online and it turns out it actually has an M2 slot in there! It's 5 years old and for some reason I just assumed it didn't have that capability, so didn't even bother looking at getting an M2 drive.

Oh well. Tbh I don't do anything intensive that would really make great use of NVME, so sticking with the SATA SSD doesn't matter that much.

I have a 1Tb M2 drive I use as my main games installation drive. Insanely fast.

I love the Samsung Data Migration Tool - it took me 6 minutes to clone my old SSD to the new one. Very quick and painless.

It took a while, but Florey's new pc arrived this week!

Final spec with slightly different from the original.
Asus ROG STRIX X570-E GAMING X570
AMD Ryzen 7 5800X 3800 AM4 WOF
CORSAIR Cooling Hydro Series H100i RGB
Corsair DIMM 32 GB DDR4-3600 Kit 18 Veng. RGB PRO
MSI 8GB D6 RTX 3070 Suprim 8G
Fractal D. Define 7 Solid
Corsair RM850X White (2018) 850W ATX24
Corsair Force MP600 1 TB, SSD 4.2/4.9G MP600 PCIe M.2
It's a very pretty and amazingly quiet little machine, and what we've thrown at it for now has been very smooth! :D

I hope Gaucho doesn't mind me hopping in here, but rather than start a whole new thread I thought I'd post a quick question.

Recently realised my PC is approaching 10 years old, and while still functional is definitely starting to creak a bit. I've spent a bit of time playing with different builds, but after seeing the advice here and in other places I've opted for something very similar to the above (like Gaucho I was originally going for an Intel chip and SATA drives, but changed tack when the advice here is backed up elsewhere as well).

So my main question is this, in terms of mobo, is there an appreciable difference between the ROG STRIX X570-f, and the ASUS TUF X570-Plus Gaming? Because I can save myself Β£60 opting for the latter, and everything I've read suggests there's a very small gap between them. Would people here agree with that?

In terms of CPU I'm looking at an AMD Ryzen 7 5800X, if that makes a difference between the choice of board.

Edit: Secondary question, what are people's thoughts on the 6-core Ryzen 5 5600X CPU vs the 8-core 5800X (as above)?

Again from what I'm reading the current difference is minimal in performance, but the 6-core chip would save me over Β£100 again. It sounds like the main reason to go for the 5800X is for theoretical future-proofing... is that about right?

The only thing you probably need to worry about mobo-wise is connectivity. Does it have all the ports etc that you want/need? PCI-E 4 or 3? etc. There's not really much reason to go with an expensive motherboard unless you are overclocking a lot and worried about the VRM temps.

As for 5600x vs 5800x: Personally I went with a 5600x recently and it's great. Gaming performance is currently quite similar, and the extra 2 cores probably won't make much of a difference any time soon. I'd save your money now if I were you, and spend it in a few years for your next upgrade instead.

Hey Sly, I have a 5600X and I have found it to be a great CPU. Personally I don't think the 5800X is worth the extra Β£100 in terms of performance and long term I don't think that gap is going to get wider. Maybe if you were doing a lot of non-gaming tasks but even then the performance increase is not massive.

In terms of boards I would look at B550s as any X570 doesn't offer a huge amount over them other than more slots and IO unless the prices are not that different. Whichever motherboard you get if you end up with a Ryzen 5 series CPU make sure you can flash the BIOS via USB as the board might not have the most up to date BIOS on it and therefore not support the new AMD chip out of the box.

The main difference between those two X570 boards you have listed is that the Asus one has a fan cooler over the chipset and the ROG appears not to and the one without a fan cooler is going to be quieter. It also has two heatsinks on the M.2 slots whilst the ASUS has just the one.

Awesome, thanks Pew and Dj.

I've definitely settled on the 5600X now I think, and also probably an ASUS B550-f motherboard, which combined save me around Β£200, with little if any performance trade-off from what I can tell, so cheers for confirming those are the right way to go :D
